Do you know what the word hors d’oeuvres means? It doesn’t mean anything. It’s a made up word. It was made up so people won’t know what’s in them. Still, some of the secrets got out. Like goose livers. And fish eggs. People don’t even ask anymore. They just say, “Pass the hors d’ouvres.” But they still stick a toothpick in them. A little wriggling is one thing, but you want to make sure it’s over with by the time you put it in your mouth.
